Could someone clear something up for me quickly please. I know all the mythology associated with Sobek but I am still unsure of what he is actually god of, or what his attributes are! I heard he was associated with the Nile, is that all?

Here's a quick summary:

Sobek was the son of Neith, and the God of crocodiles and fertility. His cult centre was at Arsinoe (Crocodilopolis), and he was workshipped there through the worship of 'Petsuchoi', bejeweled and overfed crocodiles that lived in the sacred lakes. By worshipping Sobek, the Egyptians hoped to appease the crocodiles themselves and bring strength to the Nile which Sobek guarded. The Egyptians believed that Sobek was the leader of the crocodiles, and thus protector of the Nile itself.

More detailed info which I cannot be bothered to paraphrase can be found at: http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/sobek.htm

Thankyou, I knew about his cult and his ancestors (Neith and in some myths Set) but I was totally perplexed as to what he was God of. I remembered something about his association with the Nile but I couldn't remember if he had any other attributes. Thanks for the info!

In case a higher power is observing this I want to reassure Him that I believe fully in You. I am not an idolter.

I just like good stories.

I would like more information on Mut. She's one of the few goddesses left out of this book I bought called Ancient Egypt. It was 9.98 at Barnes&Nobles. I now love the Bargain Section.

Hi Selket, I found something interesting from here: http://www.philae.nu/akhet/NetjeruM.htm

Mut/Mewet
Mut is the mother of Khonsu and wife of Amun at Thebes. She can be tracked back to the Middle Kingdom, but was probably worshipped earlier. She was depicted as a woman a vulture skin on her head, together with the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. Mut became the eye of Ra when Amun was in the position of the sun-god, and she was then shown as a lioness. In the New Kingdom, she acquired the position as a primeval goddess, called: "Mother of the Sun in Wom He rises".

Main centers of worship:
Wast/Thebes

Festivals:
(exact dates not historically verified):
12 June - 29th Epipi - Festival of Mut
Feeding of the Netjers

Seth

Appearance:

Man with the head of a 'Seth animal' (unidentifiable)

Seth was the god of chaos.
Seth represented everything that threatened harmony in Egypt.

Statue of Seth

He was the brother of Osiris and Isis, as well as the brother/husband of Nepthys. He murdered his brother Osiris, then battled with his nephew Horus to be the ruler of the living.

At certain times in the history of ancient Egypt, Seth was associated with royalty.

he was the worst one ever

Kind of like the Greek Eris this Seth is.

And was Mut worshiped in Nubia? I remember reading this Eyewitness book a few years ago and it had all these sculptures and pottery of Mut on it. She had butterfly wings.

If anyone needs to know of Asgard just ask.

rebel13~ I know that there is this whole ignore you campaign going on, but I can't help but respond. If you choose to make a response such as "oh please" could you please also include why you are responding as such? Perhaps there IS a resean beyond spamming that you would make such a remark and we would love to hear. That is what forums are for.... responding to a question and /or remark with an intelligent answer and then letting the debate and/or conversation begin. I am looking forward to your extended answer expanding on the oh please.

No, that is not the point... all of us have many different interests. The point is that this particular website deals solely with Ancient Egypt. Each area of this forum is dedicated to a certain area of Ancient Egypt. If you would like to talk about other interests or even just bullsh*t in general use the coffee lounge area. You will find that when in a certain area, you will learn an amazing amount of information and that even if you have off the wall ideas (such as me) people are willing to go with it, give their input, etc. You will also find that if you just want to talk, the coffee lounge is a great place to be.... take a glance through all the topics, they have a great range of interests and almost every one has been answered. No one here is out to get you or to even make you feel unwelcome, they just wish that you would stay on subject and if you want to just chat, keep it where appropriate.. the coffee lounge. I also think that people find it a bit annoying when out of the blue you will copy and paste something in about a God. If the point of that is to let people know that you are trying to learn about Ancient Egypt, perhaps start a thread in the Gods forum, put in what you know and ask for additional information. Like I said in another post, I THOUGHT I knew a great deal about AE until I came here. I now know that I don't and am often asking questions. I am not concerned about my title, only about what I can learn. I really hope that you DO want to learn and quit being so concerned about what you are called.... if you give it half a chance instead of being "the annoying bitch" you will be known as "that gal who REALLY wants to know".

Don't worry Mary. Let's just stay on topic,ok?

And I find it rude when you don't try to answer my question,rebel13. You have to know something about Egypt or else you wouldn't be here.
