As far as I remember I was in the main/front hall of the Egyptiam museum at very nearly the time our bus was leaving when I saw a large statue of Smenkhare- but this was not the Amarna pharoh - I think he was middle Kingdom . Did I realy see him or is my mind playing tricks. I treid looking on the web but if there are any references they are swamped by the Amarna one.

There were at least 2 pharaohs in the 13th dynasty called Smenkhare (sometimes written Semenkare)

Throne name of this ruler smn-kA-ra known of Turin Canon meant Ka is the strengthened power of Re. In faience stela of temple of Gebel Zeit discovered in 1984 is disclosed birth name Nebnwn – [My] Lord is Nun, which indicates that this ruler used galenite mines in Eastern Mountains.

J. von Beckerath suggests that name of the ruler which meant Commander of the army was primarily a title adequate to his function and became his name at the moment of his taking the rule. To the king are devoted to colossal sitting statues of Tanis (placed primarily at Memphis) and usurped later by Apopis. He ruled presumably for 2-3 years.

I wonder if it's the statues from TAnis you may have seen?

I wonder if anyone has seen one of these Smenhares in a cartouche & said 'I have found evidence of the Amarna pharoh'?

I think the Amarna king usually went by the name Ankhkheperure and the art style should be rather radically different.

And it seems that the glyphs are somewhat different as well:

I agree about the art style but I was thinking about the 'I'm not an Egyptologist but I'm going to publish a book proving X murdered king Tut' people.

LOL That made me laugh. Great description.

You may be right. It could be something that would confuse these people.

It is interesting to read that the name Smenkhare was used by other individuals. It always seems a bit out of place in the line-up of Amenhoteps and Tuthmosises. Even Akhenaten started out as an Amenhotep.
