Yes, cats and archaeology is continuing to push back our knowledge of the ancients. Historically, Egypt has been considered as the place where cats were first domesticed with proof of this dating back to Egypt 2000 BCE.
However, in the July/August 2004, issue of Archaeology currently on newsstands pg. 14. There is a short article of a new discovery of domestication of cats dating back to 9,500 BCE on the island of Cyprus! The article states that during the discovery and recovery of the burial of a high status human in a Neolithic gravesite on Cyprus. A little more than a foot away was found the burial of the remains of a Neolithic wildcat. Both the human and cat were buried symmetrically with their heads facing west. Which the article suggests may indicate a close bond in life between the two. Anyway, it is believed that this discovery pushes back cat domestication by some 7,000 years.
I wish there had been more on this new discovery but there isn't. _________________

...for some reason people tend to overexaggerate the ancient Egyptians' obsessiveness with cats. Unless it's just me. _________________ *Tadukhipa*
