| I live in New York City and it's amazing how few people visit Cleopatra's Needle. It's in terrible condition, but it still is a relic from Ancient Egypt. It's strange that it's named after Cleopatra as I believe it was built by Thutmose III. Some say it's named after Cleopatra as she had it moved from it's original location. The Met nearby has great artifacts but the guards won't let me take videos. |

Theres two right? Beacuse I believe that there is one in London.. I was actually starting to think there wasnt one in N.Y. beacuse I never hear about it. I have to visit it next time I go to New York.

Actually it was Augustus Caesar that had it moved orginally. Why it bares the name of Cleopatra? I am not really sure but considering the press Cleopatra has gotten since A. Caesar i would say it was in response to the "sex pot" reputation of Cleopatra. She was far more interested in affairs of Egyptian State, than tending to the more womanly arts such as sewing.  Here is a bit of history regarding the Obelisk. I included the history of moving it from Egypt to its present place. Because it is so neat!

Obelisk (Cleopatra's Needle): E81
[Unveiled 1881]

This colossal man-made object is certainly
a wonder to Central Park visitor who sees it.
Originally built as a pair for the
Temple of the Sun at Heliopolis around the
year 461 B.C., this four-sided Obelisk is
inscribed with Egyptian hieroglyphics honoring
Pharaoh Tutmosis III. During the era of
Augustus Caesar in 12 B.C., the Romans
moved them to the water entrance of
Caesareum at Alexandria. After the opening
of Suez Canal in 1869, Ismail Pasha, the
Khedive of Egypt, gave one Obelisk to the
United States in the hope of cultivating trade
relations between the two countries. Railroad
magnate William H. Vanderbilt contributed
over $100,000 to finance the project. The
complex task of moving the Obelisk from
Alexandria to New York was given to
Henry Gorringe, a lieutenant commander of the
U.S. Navy. This event was not completed for
another decade.
its 50-ton base, had to be moved first from its
vertical stance to a horizontal position, and
then lifted into a ship to be carried across the
Mediterranean Sea, and then over the
Atlantic Ocean. It arrived in New York in July
of 1880 and took 32 horses hitched in 16 pairs
to drag the pedestal alone through the streets
of the city. As the Obelisk traveled through
Manhattan on a special railroad track, a grueling
four months passed before it was brought
from the banks of the Hudson River to
Central Park where it still resides today on
Greywacke Knoll, just across the drive from
the then recently built Metropolitan Museum
of Art. At its base are four 900 pound,
19-century bronze replicas of crabs, which
were first placed there by the Romans, and
are also on display at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. The landscaped plaza complete
with benches that surround the Obelisk is a
perfect spot for viewing the magnitude of the
monument’s design and structure. During the
spring the plaza is abloom with Saucer magnolias
and crabapples.
The twin of this Obelisk is in London, while Rome has another in the Vatican.

There are really alot more than 3! I was wrong about one in Rome. Rome is considered to be the Obelisk City having more Obelisks than any other city in the world. There are about a dozen there, and some are modern ones. Rome is the home to the world's tallest Obelisk. Built by Thutmosis III and Thutmosis IV is stands 140ft high. It was brought to Rome by Emperor Constantius in 357 AD. Placed in the Circus Maximus it stood there until an earthquake in history knocked it down. It was "rediscovered" in 1587 and placed at the Piazza di San Goivanni where it stands to this day.

I know theres more than three obelisks  I thought that you meant that theres 3 of Cleopatras needles lol I was like whoa...

Haha. The obelisk was moved in antiquity from the Temple of the Sun in Heliopolis to the entrance to the Caesareum in Alexandria. It has been moved twice! The other obelisk is on the London Embankment, overlooking the Thames close to Big Ben and the houses of Parliament. I think the obelisk in Rome came from Philae but I am not sure. The one in the Place de la Concord in Paris came from the Temple of Luxor and is ascribed to Ramsses II. It was given by the Egyptians in exchange for a huge clock which coincidentaly never worked. This all happened in the 1820's, and the clock is now in the courtyard of the Mosque of Muhammed Ali, in Cairo's Citadel.
