Most houses in ancient Egypt were made of mud bricks. I read that they were baked in the sun but not fired, so what kept them from just turning back into mud during the first rainstorm? Anyone know? Thanks!

Mostly there are not many rainstorms in Egypt. Also if you have a good roof mudbrick will survive - there a quite a lot of old cob (cowdung & mud) houses in the rainy South West of England.
