Despite having huge amounts of desert they seem to be fond of setting up camps on top of significant archaeological sites - until recently you could not get to the red pyramid area & apparently Abu Roash is still in a military area.

That seems very suspicious, doesn't it? Why should there be a military presence there when, as you said, there is an enormous amount of desert?
