Here's a more informative report...

Two massive statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who ruled Egypt 3,400 years ago, have been discovered in the southern Egyptian city of Luxor.

Zahi Hawaas, head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, announced in a statement Thursday that the statues were found while an excavation team was clearing out the pharaoh's mortuary, near modern Luxor .

Hawaas said one statue was carved from black granite and shows the pharaoh in a seated position.

The other, carved from quartzite, depicts the pharaoh as a sphinx, the mythological creature with a human head and the body of a lion.

Amenhotep III, who ruled for about 40 years during the 14th century BC, left more images of himself than any other pharaoh.

A popular tourist destination today for its famous Valley of the Kings, Luxor is the site of the ancient Egyptian capital of Thebes.

Archaeologist Hourig Sourouzian has been directing the excavation of Amenhotep III's mortuary temple, known today as Kom al-Hitan, for several years.

and a map would have been nice as well - I am not sure where kom al hitan is relative to the fameous sites.

The mortuary temple of Amenhotep III is one of the most frequently visited sites, and is just outside of Luxor. (Thebes)

I would like to see the sphinx one too but the black granite one looks beautiful, doesn't it? I felt quite a rush seeing it just staring out of the sand. What else lies hidden in that wonderfully mysterious country?

The so-called Colossi of Mennon (which are seated statues of Amenhotep III) are actually all that is left above-ground of the mortuary temple. You might find this interesting. It's from touregypt:

Amenhotep III built not only the largest temple at Thebes (on the West Bank at Luxor), but in Egypt, measuring 700 by 550 meters. It covered 385,000 square meters (4,200,000 square feet). It was even larger than the temple of Amun-Re at Karnak. The temple's architect was also named Amenhotep, but was the son of Hapu. Unfortunately, it seem that the temple began to decay rapidly, and during the reign of Merenptah, it was actively used as a source of limestone blocks for the temple of that ruler.
