This 1 is on Minufiyeh - a province in the central delta just north of Cairo.
They have been working for the past 5 years, apart from some isolated digs the last survey was done in 1911/12.
They are doing surface observations, geophysical surveys (expensive), coring and some digging. They core with a 2 man hand auger (but sometime things are carried down so you can .only trust the centre of a core) and a system with a tribod and severalmen hammering.
They have got down to 19metres (just through the archaeology) and brick is common at 7m.
In the delta they have not found anything definate earlier than the late period except for a few possible sherds in cores. They found a copper bracelet in 1 core.
They are digging at Quesna (pronounce Wesna) In a 7 by 10 m area they found 35 burials .
At a sight called Kom el ahmar (and serveral other spellings in old records-and beware it means red mound and there are lots iof places with that namen the delta ) at lot of Naoi (the stone shrines for cult figures) have turned up but not much else apart from potsherds.
Also there are several places with Sobek in their modern names. |
