Can anybody read hieroglyphics? ive been learning but im doing it online because i lack the funding to take a course, but does anyone know a really good website to learn? and if u know it fluently, how did u learn and how long did it take? i only know the basics so far

I can not read hieroglyphs I can read some like royal names and stuff but not most of it. I want to learn though!!I am not sure if this is what you are asking but the peaple in Egypt do not speak egyptian they speak Arabic and they do not use Hieroglyphs any more. Is that what you were asking?? Rolling Eyes

Jean-Francois Champollion dedicated his life to Ancient Egpyt. In 1822, he managed to crack the code of hieroglyphs which had fallen out of use over 1,500 years before. The Rosetta stone found by one of Napoleons army was cruicial in helping Champollion discover how to read hieroglyphs.

Well, because he figured them out, when he read a different piece of heiroglyphics, he took what he knew, and tried to make sense of what he didn't. Like, say you speak Spanish, and you know the words for "I, like, swim, and very." Now, if I said I like to swim very much, you could probably figure it out. You knew "I like .. swim very ...." So, you could guess. See my point? You just have to be really smart and good at that kinda stuff. And that guy was.

Hieroglyphics was not a spoken language. It was a way of writing Ancient Egyptian, a script like Italic. It wasn't the only way, they also wrote Ancient Egyptian in cursive forms, firstly Hieratic, then Demotic, then Coptic.

I think a good way to learn things is to actually do it yourself. Look up online "Fun with Hieroglyphs" by Catherine Roehrig. It's a stamp collection. Provides 24 stamps, Hieroglyph Guidebook and an ink pad. It's awesome. I haven't used it in a LONG time sicne I just write my own hieroglyphs now.
