One Egytologist proposes that Amenhotep III (AIII)'s "ascent to godhead" by installing himself as the incarnation of the Aten was the impetus for Akhenaten to set up his religion centered on the same. Thus, when Ahkenaten calls the Aten his father, he is referring to his actual earthly father, AIII. And, if Ahkenaten was co-regent with AIII then these activities were co-existent, at least at first.
So, Ahkenaten's exploits gain a context and make sense.
