All you need is Newton and Homer to find it.

ok... enough suspense... forgive the dis-organized format of this post.

Achilies is not an Achean. Achilies is a Myrmidon... translated as "Ant-people" and a kind-of-Achean. There are no "Ant-people". He is really a "Marmaridai", from Cyrene, which is "under" or "south" of Crete.

Okeanos is not the god of the Ocean. I think Pausanias calls him "God of the Grove".

Okeanos fills all the rivers from above. He lives in the Underworld. Homer says the gods visit him in "Ethiopia". He is a "Libyan Rain God". Newton says this Ethiopia is described by Arius Montanus and Samuel Bochart as being West of Egypt. Newton says the Ethiopia derives it's name from "Land of Thebes".

As for the Grove... this is the Grove of Persephone... The Grove of Poseidon... The Apples of the Hesperides. Note: The city of the Hesperides has been excavated in Cyrene.

Atlantis is in the Ocean... the kingdom of Oceanus.

The island that sinks is called "Aphrodites Island" or "Leia". The war with Atlantis is 3 inundations before the flood of Deucalion... 3 nile floods that is, or 3 years. Let's call that 1433BC. The island sinking MAY be the cause of the flood of Deucalion.

The area of Cyrene is called Pentapolis, or 5-cities.

An interesting coincidence is Manetho's description of the hyskos is that they live in Typho's city, which is 10000 Acres... note: the length of an Acre is a stade. Plato's Atlantis myth says the plain of the country of Atlantis, or Poseidon, was 10,000 stades.

There is a legend of Alexander the Great viewing the Pillars of Hercules. This is dismissed, because he never conquers Abila and Calpe (Phoenecian Pillars). He does conquer Cyrene.

Here is a roman map of cyrene... note: there are pillars of hercules placed on the "Gadir River".
http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Gazetteer/Maps/Periods/Roman/Places/Africa/Cyrene/1.html

http://cyrenaica.org/

The war is between the "Antides" and "Heliades". Antaeus equals Poseidon equals Seth from the West. Helius equals Phaeton.

This makes Gebel El-Akhdar - Mount Atlant or Mount Atlas

The region of Cyrene is called Ammonia, and part of Egypt. There is also a Serapion on the map, city of Serapis, who should live around 1538BC, married to IO.

Another unimportant interesting coincidence is the "Tyndarian Peaks" on the map... Hercules battles a King Tyndareus of Crete, in his labors.

Menelaus is on the map. He is described by homer as wandering through the underworld, also wandering in Africa.

Plato is just a has-been who I had to dress up as in a sixth grade presentation on ancient philosophy (why I didn't chose to do something easier, I don't know.. but that's a different topic).

As legend goes, Homer created the Atlantis myth, as a sort of fable. Now, as far as Newton... I'm guessing the gravity pulling the apple on top of his head is in retrospect the same thing that happened to Atlantis, pulling it on top of ... a fishes' head? I don't know. ...I think I'm just typing to type right now.

Hmm... I've changed locations. Moved a couple hundred miles east.

I think the plain of Atlantis - 2000x3000 stades should instead be:
2000x3000 hyat (17 feet). Each farmer farms an Acre of Land ("1 sq khet") instead of 1.25 sq miles, as is writtten. (This reduces the plain to 66 sq miles)

This plain may correspond with Canopus ("Kah Nub")(City of the Golden Floor/Plain). This place is also called "Gauti"(similar sounding to Gades)

The island may be Pharos. The term country may instead be nome.

Greek mythology has a Proteus(old man in the sea) in Pharos around 1200BC. IO and Serapis have been linked to Pharos as well(~1500BC).

The Eridanus river appears to flow north, hence a branch of the nile. I'm thinking the Canopic Branch.

My timeframe is 1600-1200BC.

Anybody know what the Ancient Egyptian term for "Golden Gates" would be?

Atlantis is described as "Greater than Libya and Asia"...
this might be a mis-translation....

Compare Skylax of Karayandia (500BC)
"And the Kanopic mouth bounds Asia and Libya."
...
"seventh [the Canobic, with Thonis, a city: After these places a lake] which has the name
[Mareia. And this lake is already in ] Libya" -- Skylax

"the Heracleotic or Canobic mouth" -- Ptolemy

"quae quidem insula fertur aliquanto maior fuisse quam Libya atque Asia.

Indeed which the island to the certain amount have been more great as Libya and Asia is brought. " -- Calcidius Timaeus (Blitz Latin Translation)

The Libya & Asia mentioned are obviously not the modern country & continent. What modern areas do they cover?

Exactly... it is very unclear. Something has been loast in translation.

The standard translation is that the island is bigger than Libya and Asia combined. This does not make much sense. Especially in context when it says the island has a diameter of 5 stades... it is a dinky littly island.

My interpretation is that it seems to indicate the island is close to or above(North of) the boundary of Asia and Libya. ie. Pharos on the canobic mouth.

Found the Golden Gate I was looking for... the Canobic Gate.

"10...The broad street that runs lengthwise extends from Necropolis past the Gymnasium to the Canobic Gate; and then one comes to the Hippodrome, as it is called, and to the other (streets?) that lie parallel, extending as far as the Canobic canal." -- Strabo Book XVII Chapter 1 (§§ 1-10).htm
