Right. Ok. This idea was too cool to just stay as an idea- it needs to actually take form.
Here's how I suggest we begin. Firstly we find everyone on KTO who is willing to volunteer themself as a tutor. I assume that Maatkare and myself are already in on this one, but it would be nice to have several tutors. Then we will make a free e-mail address (something like "learn_hieroglyphs@yahoo.co.uk"), and give all the tutors the password. Then we advertise the address on several different Egyptology sites as a mailing list on which you can learn hieroglyphs for free.
That's just the basic concept, but obviously we'd have to work out a rough 'lesson plan' first, and we'd all have to study really hard to be good enough to stay ahead of the students. lol. It would also be a great way for us to improve our skills, and learn from one another. There's loads more that we still haven't got worked out, but I believe that anyone who is studying from G.E.G will be more than qualified to begin to share their knowledge of the language with others.
Another big difficulty would be providing texts and exercises, but it wouldn't be too difficult to make our own exercises and texts using a graphics program- we could just arrange the symbols ourselves, and I could always write to Nigel Strudwick (the guy who does typesetting for the British Museum) if we got stuck. Anyone with good computer skills would be useful, as we want this to at least look vaguely passable as professional. lol. This is going to be such fun!
I suggest that everyone who wants to be involved say so here, and perhaps suggest something that they could contribute. Thank you before hand. _________________

I think this is a great idea!
I know Maatkara, and I have a great esteem of her!!
Personally, I think she could be a great tutor on hieroglyphs...
I would like to be involved in this project, but my hieroglyphs knowledge is very very bad... |

That is irrelevant. Sort of. You could still help with graphics, advertising, and excursus tutoring (teaching about the Egyptian history accompanying the hieroglyphs).
We need a name to give the e-mail address. Any ideas? I'm thining along the lines of "Hieroscribe" or something. Only less ridiculous. _________________

If you need my help with something, I could teach adequately well up to determanatives(eses). heh.. Or, I could make the graphics rather easily, now that the program I use has updated. (woo!)
hierosribe@ sounds pretty cool, actually. But are you wanting to go for something more "businesslike", or what? _________________ "Does anyone ever truly think 'outside' of the box, or are they merely expanding the possibilities of what that box can hold to suit their own agenda?"

Well- I don't think that we need to make it sound too 'business-like' unless we actually intend to charge people for our tutoring, which I don't think is an option. When we have decided on a name then we also need to choose a domain. Here are the best free ones that I could find:
@yahoo.co.uk
@teacher.com
@archaeologist.com
@dr.com
And what about this slogan:
Hieroscribe! Hire a scribe for all your Hieroglyphic needs!
Back on topic, your help in graphic design would be very useful. Once we have established a name then it would be great if you could design a letter header and footer for all our e-mails. Thanks in advance! _________________

This sounds like a great idea, Psusennes! I'd love to help with this project but my knowledge of hieroglyphs and Egypt altogether have fallen drastically and I couldn't give much more help than someone who started studying Egypt this morning.
Neb, Maatkara, and you are the ones I know who could really pull this off. I don't know who else is creative enough to do the header/footer other than Ramses. DM_28 has great art talent so I'd ask her.
Good luck!

I cannot find a decent way to create the e-mail address. Grrr! Both hotmail and yahoo will not accept 'Hieroscribe@', and I really don't want it to sound ridiculously tacky by adding letters and underscores. Can anyone help? _________________

This sounds cool Psus! I would love to help where I can but more importantly I am looking forward to learning and working through the exercises.
How about Hierohelp@ (domain)? _________________

Yes! It's done.
The e-mail address which will be checked regularly by me and to which anyone who wants to join the group should e-mail (including name, skill level, contact address etc.) is:
hieroscribes@yahoo.com
I am currently writing the introductory lesson and welcome e-mails for those who choose to join- free of charge! Naturally, once we begin everyone will be able to contribute their own lessons and suggest alterations to the course, and it is my hope that after we have 'piloted' the scheme on ourselves we will be able to turn it to the eye of the Egyptian community. There are many other courses similar to this one available on the internet, but as they all cost ludicrous sums of money I expect that we will not fare too badly. _________________

Please send your contact e-mail (the one that you want to use) to Hieroscribes@yahoo.com so that I can e-mail you the introduction.
It's finished! _________________

I just thought of something. Psusennes, would you accept another domain if I could give you one? _________________
