The Great Sphinx at Giza is thought to represent either Khafre, or as more recent evidence suggests, Djedefre. Both Kings are possible subjects of the statue. _________________

The Great Sphinx is a large statue at Giza, but 'sphinx' is just the Greek name for the human, ram, falcon or animal headed lions that can be found in Egypt. _________________

In some cases the sphinx is a representation of the sun God, or the sum at the most burning period of the day. It is usually a ram or lion with the head of a human (usually that of a king). The two main ideas are simplified thus:
- A representation of a king, animals body, head of the king.
- A representaion of the Sun God at his most hot and burning time in the sky. _________________ Thou dost appear beautiful on the horizon of heaven, oh living Amun, he who was the first to live. |

The Sphinx resembles khufu and it was thought to be built by djefre
people believe that the forgotten pharaoh djedefre built the sphinx and it resembles his father Khufu the sphinx is the guardian of the Giza Plateau

They had a whole special on this on the Discovery channel, and they discussed about Djedefre and Khufu, and whether it was one or the other as the sphinx. From what I've seen, they're guessing Djedefre is the face of the sphinx. I wish I could remember the name of the show, though. It was about an hour long, and a LOT of debating. _________________
