|
|
I have promised a number of people that I would start this thread, so that I (and anyone else) could help people with the exercises in Gardiner's Egyptian Grammar (the only 'real' way to learn and understand the language of the Ancient Egyptians in full), and in general help people with anything that they find difficult with transliteration and translation. G.E.G does get a little daunting around exercise VI or VII, I have found, and I believe that it would be infinetely useful to have somewhere to discuss the exercises and so on. That is why I have started this thread.
I myself am about two thirds of the way through G.E.G, but I try to do a little more each day. For this reason I am clearly not an expert, but am perfectly willing to aid those who are having problems with the earlier exercises, or just have general questions. I am more than positive that if I cannot help there will be others at KTO who can. For this reason this thread is open to all, and any contributions will be welcome.
If you have a question relating to Hieroglyphs, or merely wish to state whether you are using G.E.G or another book, then feel free to do so. I hope that this is a useful thread _________________

Heylą! Good idea!
As I already told you in the past, I do have few questions, but I wonder how can let you know...I'll be the owner of a new scanner soon, but meanwhile? do you have any idea on how can I tell you what is my problem? I should show you the signs....

Just post the transliteration of your answers onto the net. It would be nice to see some handwritten hieroglyphs too, but you'll need to host them on a seperate site so that I can see them, or you can e-mail them to me.
Until then just send the transliteration, question number and page, and what you want my help with. Good luck! _________________

maatkare, one way you might be able to easily explain your problem and ask about specific signs is by refering to .Gardiner's Sign List.
ex. ankh=[S34]
It is extremely helpful to print out the pages of the link above for ease of communcating signs over this and other sites especially since the transliteration alone will not comminicate which signs were used. _________________

Good idea- most of the vocabulary in the exercises is straight forward- but using the sign-list to specify the determinatives particularly is a very good idea. _________________
