Well, it was thought that they used Henna( a plant that's flowers were used as a cosmetic to color palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and the hair) to paint the toenails of the bodies during mummification, but the discoloration might have actually been from the nails drying out during embalming.

The use of henna as a decoritive element for the body was used on most occasions, and was used almost dailey by the AE. Much like the people of India today, patterns were drawn on the palms of the hands, the bottom of the feet were hennaed, designs were drarwn on the arms, the fingernails were stained--but I dn't know if the henna was used on the toenails. Be the way, henna is still used quite a bit. Women with black or dark brown hair use it to give the hair a reddish highlight.

I got a henna tattoo on my hand. It came off after a week or two. It was really pretty.
