Hi all,

For a while, I've been trying to find what is the most important thing that we've learned from reading ancient hieroglyphs? had it not been for Rosetta Stone, what would have been lost? Is there anything that was discovered from ancient writing that has impacted us directly?

Thank you,

Mike

For a start, we are able to read cartouches. Then there is the matter of mummies that were moved from their own tombs in order to keep them safe from tomb robbers. Understanding hieroglyphs helps us to discover who is who. Without this knowledge we would know a lot less than we do now, in my opinion. Wink

Before the Rosetta stone and the work on unlocking the ancient Egyptian language to us, the written history of Egypt was lost. The splendors of the civilization were, of course, to be seen, but the history was unavailable, only that mention of Egypt in the Bible, and other sources that would mention Egypt in passing. When, with the decipherment of the hieroglyphs, it became possible to read what the Egyptians had written about themselves, it was possible for us to further understand the workings of the ancient culture.

Yes, it certainly opened doors once the hieroglyphs were understood. We have much to be thankful for.
