Hallo, I am actually a botanist and recently came upon a statement in a graduate's report: Chocolate was around 1500BC in Egypt! Anybody else caught up with this unlikely rumour? Any proof? Of course everyone knows that the Egyptians and the Mayas were in constant contact....

Chocolate was not used in AE.
It was not seen in the Old World until it was brought there by the conquest of Mexico/South America.
It takes a big stretch of the imagination to think that the Maya and the AE were in contact.

There is chocolate substitute made of carob. Did the ancient Egyptians make a substitute before they found the real thing?

I know they made a sort of wheat with carubs, but not that sort of chocolate you mean.... Wink

The carob trees fruit, called nedjem by the ancient Egyptians, was also used to brew an alcoholic beverage, but as Maatkaara says, it was not used as chocolate.

Well I don't know I watched it on NGC and they said that Aztecs invented chocolate!
