When did it actually pop up? I've heard different things about this, and I'm curious. _________________ *Tadukhipa*

Meaning "great house", the word pharaoh came to be used as a synonym for the Egyptian king under the New Kingdom (1539-1292bc). _________________ |\| e F e r t i |< a u r E |

and originally it was pronounced "per-aa", later Greeks pronounced it as "pharaoh".
I thought this is generally accepted. What other things have you heard? (just curious) |

Mostly just different times that the word popped up. I've read that Akhenaten was the first guy to use it as a title (and goodness knows I could see him coming up with a way to mess up the language as well...), or else that it was the greeks that started using it as a title, and I've also heard that the phrase wasn't coined until the 1800's. I've always know that it meant "Great House" though. _________________ *Tadukhipa*

| I think it was first used during the 18th dynasty, but I'm not sure. |

I heard that it was first used under the reign of Amunhotep III, but it could have been a different Amunhotep, I read it quite a while ago _________________ -Akhenaten- |

| I guess they were mentioned as nsw-bit, the ancient word for "king", or they were called by their coronation names. |
