Nefertiti was the chief wife of Akhenaten. Because of his love for her, he allowed her to do many things that only a pharaoh was customed to do. This is why we see her riding chariots along beside her husband, and why she wears the type of headdress that only pharaohs would usually wear. Nefertiti may have also become very powerful because of her husband's weaknesses...he had many disablilities.
We don't excatly know if Nefertiti ruled a long time after Akhenaten, because we are still not sure if Nefertiti was Smenkaure (the pharaoh who ruled after Akhenaten) they could have been the same person.

A little more info. on Nefertiti:

Nefertiti was the daughter of Aye (Akhenaten's Vizier), who was the brother of Tye (Queen wife of Amunhotep III, Akhenaten's father). She bore to Akhenaten six daughters, of which we know all the names (But I can't remember them).

Neither her tomb nor body have been found yet, they may have been destroyed by people who didn't like her husband very much.

She is also famous because of her famous bust, made by royal sculptor Thutmose. I'm sure you've seen pictures of it.

BTW, her children's name: Meritaten, Meketaten, Ankhesenpaaten, Neferneferuaten, Neferneferure and Setepenre. (how can you not remember them, Akhenaten? )
