Maatkara, here's the site to read the actual copy of the DNA report.
http://www.cbc.ca/disclosure/archives/040113_nef/documents/dna_test.pdf
It should stop all the conjecture about the mummy, but some people do not take it as fact, but insist that the mummy is, if not Nefertiti, that of a woman.
You have a good day too! |

My opinion is, no, the mummy discovered is not Nefertiti. Though some of the topmost experts, such as Kent Weeks ans Zahi Hawass have not pointedly denied the possibility, they have brought forth the simple point that the tests performed and the analysis made on the highly cavalier Discovery Channel was nowhere near infallable. It remains as likely as not that the mummy is not that of Nefertiti.
That same episode, in digging into the supposed history of Egypt and Nefertiti herself, displayed dozens of historical innaccuracies.
Assuming Nefertiti ruled after Akhenaten's death, the mummy discovered would not be the proper age. It was claimed she was 25 years old, when recent research is placing her between 16 and 20. There were many royal women from the appropriate period buried in the royal necropolises on the West Bank at Thebes, now Luxor. Those from a specific line of a royal family would look very similar, of course, especially considering how prevelent interbreeding could become.
They claim that the wounds the mummy had suffered somehow proved her to be Nefertiti. In fact, quite often, bits of wealth were placed within a mummy's body caveties, leading tomb robbers to break limbs in order to remove them. It was indicated that mummies with bent arms is, apparently, something unique to kings in ancient Egypt. Well, for one, there was only one bent arm. And many non-kings have been found in such positions.
The 'royal wig' that many cite as proof of Nubian royalty was found near three unidentified mummies, two women and one boy. Beyond that, the workers who were with Fletcher during the discovery deny even having seen the wig at all. The double piercing of the earlobes used to cite Nubian female fashion was actually quite popular among the mummies discovered in the New Kingdom youth.
Beyond all of this, the individual who claims to have discovered and identified the body, when in fact she has done neither, one Joann Fletcher, obtained her degree a very short time ago. Who would blame someone for wishful thinking?
In the end, Fletcher broke the SCA's code of ethics, by creating false evidence to support her claims, and they've suspended her research for it.
We have to be careful of these huge media exploitations. The moment tiny innaccuracies become accepted as gospel, it grows like cancer. Next thing you know, it's in a textbook where 'theory' becomes 'fact.' _________________ ~Temrutyemwepwawet

Saphira, those reports that Osiris II linked here, are not "just an opinion"!!! Read them carefully instead of saying that" your idea is this and that..."..... |

| Hi. I watched the episode and have looked up alot of info on the web. I think it could very well be Nefertiti. They say the body is of a young lady, but Nefertiti should have only been about thirty when she died, which is not really old. Their proof is that she doesn't have wisdom teeth. I'm 37 and do not have any wisdom teeth, and was told I probably won't ever get them. Lack of wisdom teeth should not be the only determinant of age. As for DNA testing, they would have to have a relative of Nefertiti to compare her to, and I don't think one exists, right ? I've always been totally intrigued with Egypt and am currently writing my final paper on Nefertiti, and not finding alot of info on her. Very mysterious woman. |

Are we talking about the same mummy here? The one infamously flaunted around as Nefertiti by Dr. Fletcher? The one in that overly convincing and ridiculously slanted Discovery channel documentary?
The mummy has been shown to be male, by two completely separate tests conducted on the tissue and bone of the mummy. This sort of DNA test it pretty innacurate however, and tests on Egyptian DNA show that it rarely survives, even in bone marrow. Generally the bands of X or Y chromosomes become dimmer as the mummy's tissue decays, but in the case of 'Nefertiti', both X and Y chromosomes were clearly visible on the scansheets, indicating a male. Other Egyptologists who saw the corpse were somewhat perplexed by Fletcher's conclusion to begin with, due to the size of the pelvis and mandible. Those who origianally viewed the mummy in the last centuries however did describe femal genitalia. It's all very perplexing- perhaps Fletcher's imagination was slightly too overactive:
"Think of the tight-fitting, tall blue crown worn by Nefertiti, something that would have required a shaven head to fit properly"
- Joann Fletcher, attempting to explain why the mummy was bald. _________________

| Yes, that would be the one. I have read where another woman is claiming to have made the same claim in 1999, so Fletcher is not the first with her Nefertiti suspicions. As for the x & y chromosomes, and the deteriation of the mummy effecting the chromosomes, are you saying that the mummy is not "old" enough to be Nefertiti ? Not by age but how long it's been there ? I am no Egyptologist, only a very interested United States citizen, never been out of the US, but my all time dream is to some day go to Egypt. This is all very intriguing to me. |
